Entitlement

In today's day in age, everyone is entitled.  Everyone deserves something more because they feel as though they've contributed enough to this society, so society should start giving back.  They feel as if they've bettered the world in some way or another.

I find that New Englanders are the worst with this "entitlement."  New Englanders whine and complain about every little thing possible, be it weather, shopping, each other, it's a giant pity fest for New Englanders.  If it rains, we complain.  If it snows, we complain.  If it's over 75 degrees, we complain.  If it's a little windy, we complain.  If the sun is too bright, we complain.  It's a never ending cycle of "woe is me" and "this really sucks" with us New Englanders. 

Not only that, but I find, working for Verizon, that people feel really entitled because they are paying for a service that our modern-day society needs.  They feel that they deserve a free phone, a foot rub, and for someone to wipe their ass, all because they pay their bill every month.  Let me ask you this, do you  feel that National Grid should give you free lamps and appliances because you are paying for the electricity to fuel these things?  Do you feel National Grid should buy your furnace because you are paying your gas bill every month?  Verizon, of all companies, gives it's customers the most perks and pleasures to make their lives easier.  Some may disagree on this, but when you actually work for the company and know the ins and outs of it, then you can come disagree with me.

I recently read a book called, "Generation Me" about our generation and what  it's becoming.  It's truly fascinating at how entitled and angry our generation is.  We feel, as Generation Me'ers that we can go to college, graduate, and leave to immediately start a job making six figures without the pain and worry that careers often bring. 

Everything we are taught from childhood to adulthood is about "self."  Self-esteem, self-conscious, self-loving.  Everything is self-related and that we must do what's good for the "self."  Every kid that participates in sports gets a trophy or award now because it improves self-image and self-esteem.  Discipline is a thing of the past because it promotes self-conscious mindsets.  Let me tell you something about this "self" stuff...it's garbage.  Regardless of what you teach a child about his or her self, when they hit the real world and start living their own life, they will begin to realize just how hard it is to keep that self-esteem and self-image.  You are preparing them for disaster by holding their hand, promoting this self-worth. 

Now, that Generation Me'ers are hitting college and graduating, we are finding that all we are taught in childhood really isn't true.  It's very difficult to be "whatever you want to be."  Especially considering we aren't all on the same level of intelligence, like we are assumed to be as children.  I could never go to school to become a doctor like my brother is.  I don't have the intelligence for that field.  It's not that easy to just go to school and come out a famous rock star.  And we feel as though we deserve a lot for a little work.  That's a self thing, too.  We feel that by just being ourselves, we should get paid infinite amounts of money for scrubbing toilets.  No one gets paid enough for the amount of work we do anymore.  It's not like it used to be in our parents time where they went to work, collected a paycheck, and came home happy with what they made.  No...now, we demand more.  We feel as though we are entitled to more.  Newsflash: You aren't really entitled to anything.  You are choosing this path.  That's the beauty of America...we have the right to choose.

So, just to remind you all, you aren't entitled to anything.  And I highly suggest you read this book, "Generation Me" just to see exactly how our generation is and what it's becoming.  It's kind of scary to think that we will be running the country someday, because quite honestly, our generation seems kind of screwed...
